Link Wray is among the Native American artists who are featured in PBS' Independent Lens episode, RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World, which creator Stevie Salas set in motion while on tour with Rod Stewart.
Salas said he began to wonder if he was "the only Indian to have ever played at (New York’s) Madison Garden?... So I started to investigate."
Salas said he'd long admired Wray, but had no idea the guitarist was a Native American. Salas said he quickly learned about Jesse Ed Davis, of Kiowa and Comanche ancestry, who performed with John Lennon. The hobby, eventually led to an exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, then the documentary- which also touches on Charley Patton, a Mississippi Delta guitarist of Choctaw and African-American ancestry, Charley Patton- who Howlin' Wolf said taught him to play guitar, jazz vocalist Mildred Bailey- said to have inspired Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, and a number of other performers.
Co-director Catherine Bainbridge calls the performers part of a "missing chapter to this history of music."
