#WhatsHappening for August 31, 2017

Good Thursday evening, kids. I've been busy, busy, busy at my day job this week, so I've kind of slacked off, huh?

First off, the pictures out of Texas. Just, wow.
If you want to help, may I suggest donating to JJ Watt's fundraiser?  NPR also has a list of worthy charities here. You'll note that the Red Cross is not one of them- there are far too many questions swirling around the organization's handling of donated funds in the aftermath of recent emergencies.

Bruce Springsteen has extended his Broadway run at the Walter Kerr Theatre to 18 weeks after selling out his 10 week stint there in less than one day.
The solo show, entitled Springsteen on Broadway, will see the Boss doing five shows a week beginning on October 3rd.
Tickets for the show are available only through Ticketmaster Verified Fan in an effort to combat scalpers and resellers- who were reported to already be asking for $10,000 a ticket for the initial shows.

Lest you forget I'm an asshole.

Don't forget to join us this weekend for Saturday Night Karaoke- live, loud, and in your face at the Iron Horse Tavern this week.

Birthdays today include: Debbie Gibson (47); Jeff Russo of Tonic (46); Larry Waddell of Mint Condition (54); Gina Schock of The Go-Go's (60); Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze (60)Anthony Thistlethwaite of The Waterboys (62); Rudolf Schenker of Scorpions (69); and Van Morrison (72). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for August 27, 2017

Good Sunday morning, kids. Hope you've all enjoyed your weekend so far.
College football kicked off this weekend, though a full slate ramps up beginning Thursday- which, of course, is the eve of the long Labor Day weekend- which also means throngs of nerds in downtown Atlanta for DragonCon alongside the throngs of college football fans who'll be in town for the two "kick off" games.
Living downtown as I did when I first left Savannah, it was always amusing to watch the reactions of the football folks to the 'con folks.

I was sad to read this morning that director Tobe Hooper had died late last night.
Best known for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hooper was also Steven Spielberg's choice to direct a little movie called Poltergeist- which was actually scarier than the former (don't get your panties in a wad- Texas Chainsaw is visceral, gritty, and horrifying, but Poltergeist is a slow burn that relied on spook factor more than "gotcha" moments).
No cause of death has been reported.

Coldplay and Mary J. Blige were among the acts who cancelled performances this weekend as Hurricane Harvey bore down on Texas.
Coldplay announced Friday morning that their concert that night in Houston would be rescheduled, as they felt they couldn't ask fans "to put their safety at risk. So, sadly, we will have to postpone."
Blige's show across town at the Smart Financial Center was also rescheduled for next month, with a post to Facebook letting fans know that "Tickets for (the) show will be honored on September 19th. If you are not able to attend the rescheduled date, refunds will be made available at the point of purchase."
Lady Antebellum's show this afternoon was cancelled outright in the "interest of fan safety" and show promoter LiveNation said that fans would automatically receive refunds.

There's a whole page on Billboard dedicated to the VMAs and I'll repeat: MTV hasn't been a venue for music videos for fucking years- why do they still pretend otherwise? I don't get it.

The Fall have announced that they would be cancelling their appearance at Louisville’s Cropped Out festival after front man Mark E. Smith was hospitalized for throat, mouth, and respiratory problems.
A statement from the band's manager said they'd also be cancelling their New York City show, too- but added that "NYC has been rescheduled already and we are gonna arrange another show in Louisville."

And yet another one... Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were forced to cancel their Friday night gig- their second cancellation of the week- as Petty continued to battle laryngitis.
Petty's Twitter account told fans that "all tickets for tonight's show to be honored on the new date"- which will be next Friday. The band's scheduled show tonight in Berkeley was postponed until Wednesday, while they'll attempt to make up for last Wednesday's cancellation tomorrow night.

Wait a minute- Fifth Harmony is a group of women? I thought it was a boy band.
Man, I am out of touch old.

Billboard headline: Joey Bada$$ Says He Has To Wear Special Sunglasses After Staring At The Eclipse
I hope those "special sunglasses" include some sort of feature that smacks him for being a dumbass.

Birthdays today include: Sarah Neufeld of Arcade Fire (38); Jon Siebles of Eve 6 (38); Mase (40); Tony Kanal of No Doubt (47); Bobo of Cypress Hill (49); Yolanda Adams (55); Glen Matlock of Sex Pistols (61); Alex Lifeson of Rush (64); Jeff Cook of Alabama (68); and Daryl Dragon of Captain & Tennille (75). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for Augsut 23, 2017

Hey kids- happy hump day.
It's hard to believe that Labor Day will be on us soon- and that means it's time to get ready, because The Eighth Annual Costumes & Karaoke Party returns to the Iron Horse Tavern in October. Sexy, funny, scary- you name it, it'll be there- along with prizes for best costume, scariest costume, sexiest costume, and best performance-related costume. We'll nail down the date soon- but I'm guessing October 28th, so mark your calendar!

I really need some coffee, but my feet are killing me. Back when I had to have that tendon in my ankle repaired, the doctor told me I also had plantar fasciitis- which wasn't making my feet feel any better. But I really want some coffee. Anyway, while I was out...

Sheila E. is percussionist for Prince's band in the film.
Showtime has acquired broadcast rights to Prince's Sign O' The Times concert movie, which was filmed at Paisely Park and during dates in the Netherlands and Belgium during the worldwide tour in support of the album (which I still say was the best album he ever did- and I freaking love Purple Rain).
The movie has reportedly never been released on DVD, though Amazon does list BluRay copies as being available- for the low, low price of $175.75.

Note 7 in action.
I see where Samsung has unveiled the successor to their ill-fated Note 7, which was famous for spontaneously bursting into flames. I think they should call the new one "Phoenix", but it has been dubbed the Note 8.

Demi Lovato announced on Twitter today that she'd be joining the list of performers at this Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.
Lovato joins Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, and other previously announced entertainers. I have to wonder though, wouldn't you think MTV would be announcing performers?
Also, since it's called the Video Music Awards, shouldn't the network, you know, actually play some fucking music videos? For fuck's sake.

Taylor Swift has a new album coming out. The singer made the announcement today. For some reason, her fans are completely losing their shit about it.
Alright then.
Are we 100% sure Corey Feldman isn't Skrillex?
Police in Saudi Arabia have arrested a 14-year-old boy after he was filmed dancing to the Macarena at an intersection in Jiddah.
The video, which of course went viral, shows the boy dancing in the intersection while wearing head phones and wearing gray sweat shorts, a striped T-shirt and neon green and yellow Crocs. (Seriously? I mean, I'm no haute couture template, but was it the fashion police that arrested him?)
The young man was charged with disrupting traffic and improper public behavior and released to his father.

Birthdays today include: SkyBlu of LMFAO (31); Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots (56); Edwyn Collins (57); Rick Springfield (68); Linda Thompson (70); and Roger Greenway (79). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for August 19, 2017

Good Saturday morning, kiddios. Hope you're all digging the weekend so far- and don't forget to join us tonight for Saturday Night Karaoke, live at the Iron Horse Tavern. Mark says he's feeling better, so he'll be on hand to rock your socks off.
Fuck him- I'm not paying.

Kiss douche-canoe Gene Simmons is has filed a copyright claim on the "devil's horns" hand sign.
It does give me an idea, though.
I'm claiming this hand gesture.

So I see that Insane Clown Posse is having a rally of their fans (the Juggalos) on the National Mall in Washington, DC on September on September 17th- which just happens to be the same day that a bunch of racist dipshits are holding a pro-Trump rally on the other end of the Mall.
Nothing bad's gonna happen there, am I right?

Speaking of stupid racist shit, anyone besides me think it's just fucking ridiculous that Johnny Cash's family has to make a statement that, just because some fuckstick was wearing a tee-shirt with the singer's likeness on it during the fuckery at UVA last week doesn't mean he has any connection to them?

Trey Songz has been sentenced to 18 months on probation after taking a plea deal on assault charges stemming from an incident in Detroit last year.
Trey Songz was facing a felony assault charge for punching a police officer, but plead guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace.
Prosecutors claimed that microphones and speakers were thrown from stage during his December concert at Joe Louis Arena after the singer was told to end his performance.
He apologized to the city, saying "I love Detroit" and added that had no intention of causing a disturbance.

Birthdays today include:  Lil' Romeo (28); MC Eric of Technotronic (49); Lee Ann Womack (51); John Deacon of Queen (66); Ian Gillan of Deep Purple (72); and Ginger Baker of Cream (78). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for August 15, 2017

Good Tuesday morning, friends.

I really try to keep this space as apolitical as possible, but this past weekend's terrorism in Charlottesville has shaken us here at the karaoke compound. And the fact that such ugliness occurred in this day and age should sicken everyone.

Taylor Swift has won her countersuit against the man who "grabbed her ass" during a meet and greet after one of her concerts in Colorado after a jury returned a verdict in the pop star's favor yesterday.
Swift said in a statement she thanked the judge and "jury for their careful consideration, my attorneys... for fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault, and especially anyone who offered their support throughout this four-year ordeal and two-year long trial process.
I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves."
Swift was awarded $1, an amount she calls "symbolic."

The families of the 22 people killed by the terrorist attackk on the Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena in May will each receive $324,000 from the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.
"The payments will ensure the families benefit from the phenomenal outpouring of public support following the attack," said a press release.
The fund has raised more than $23 million from members of the public and with the help of Grande, who raised funds through the One Love Manchester benefit concert she hosted in June. All proceeds from the event, which featured performances by Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and others, went towards We Love Manchester.

Original lead singer Lou Gramm, Ian McDonald, and Al Greenwood played a three-song encore with the current Foreigner lineup last month in in Wantagh, NY and group founder Mick Jones says that might not be the last time fans see the "classic" lineup together again.
"Oh, it's definitely crossed my mind," Jones says. "I think it's something the fans would love. It'd be interesting, the contrast of the two styles of the two bands. I think it would be appealing. It's not carved in whatever things are carved in, but the thoughts are flowing around. But I'm still not quite sure how to forecast it."
"One thing for sure is all the musicians are getting on very well together and it's just refreshing and we're really enjoying it," adds Jones. "Lou is good, and he's kept his voice. Al and Ian are playing the same as they did 40 years ago, basically, and it's a hoot. It's great adrenaline and very enjoyable. I think there's no bad apple anywhere in the whole thing, so I can't see any big problems."

Birthdays today include: Joe Jonas of Jonas Brothers (28); Michael Graham of Boyzone (45); Bobby Caldwell (65); drummer Tommy Aldridge (67); Doobie Brothers co-founder Tom Johnston (69); Jimmy Webb (71); Pete York of the Spencer Davis Group (74); and Stix Hooper of the Crusaders (79). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for August 12, 2017

Good Saturday morning, kids. (Hey, at least I got the date right this morning!)
Don't forget to join Mark tonight for Saturday Night Karaoke at the Iron Horse- live, loud, and all up in your business from 10pm-1am!

If you'll look to the right, you'll see that I've added a "Follow by E-Mail" link to page, as well as a Song Request form. If you'd like to get these little missives via e-mail, fill out the first one. If there's a song you want to perform with us that isn't in the songbook, go ahead and send it along.

I'd ask that you please keep in mind that I know fuck-all about current music so I kind of need you to send me the title and artist! Oh, also that some selections might not be available (and I have zero control over that), and- if it's a song I've removed from the book (like Don't Stop Believin'), it's not coming back.
Recent additions to the playlist include Owl City's Fireflies, Walk the Moon's Shut Up And Dance, and Falco's version of Der Kommisar.

Looks like I (and millions of others who'd been reporting it) wasn't the only one convinced by Taylor Swift's testimony- the judge in case between Swift and former Denver DJ David Mueller has tossed the case, ruling that he offered no proof
that her allegations of groping cost him his job.
As Nelson Muntz would say, "ha ha!"
U.S. District Judge William Martinez ruled yesterday it didn't appear that Swift's intent was to get Mueller fired and she would not be held liable. Similar allegations against her mother and radio handler will go to the jury.
I'm sure Mr. Mueller would welcome in the employ of our current president.

A post on Glen Campbell's Facebook page said the singer was laid to rest in Delight, Arkansas- his hometown- on Wednesday after a private burial ceremony.
"The Campbell family would like to thank everyone for their enormous outpouring of love and support," the statement read. "Glen was laid to rest on Wednesday in a private ceremony in his hometown of Delight, AR. A private memorial will follow."
Still no word on a public memorial.

Fulton County DA Paul Howard said yesterday that there is no current investigation of R. Kelly in light of allegations that he had held women against their will, despite calls Fulton County Commission chair John Eaves for a criminal investigation.
Eaves claims a "detailed local investigation by the John Creek Police Department has provided key information that we believe is enough evidence that gives the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office all it needs to advance a criminal investigation of the well-known allegations," allegations that sprang from a Buzzfeed article.
Kelly and his attorneys have denied the allegations

Birthdays today include: Tanita Tikaram (46); Sir Mix-A-Lott (Not in the songbook, not coming back) (54); Roy Hay of Culture Club (56); Pat Metheny (63); Jerry Speiser of Men At Work (64); Kid Creole (no, not the one who stabbed the homeless man) of Kid Creole & the Coconuts (67); and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits (68). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for August 11, 2017

Good Friday evening, friends. Hope you've all had a great weekend. Now, let's get this weekend rolling, m'kay?

Let me say upfront that I'm not a fan of Taylor Swift (I'm pretty sure I've said that before) and wouldn't know her if she knocked on my front door and started singing one of her terrible songs if I answered. Still, I am a fan of her testimony in the lawsuit/countersuit Swift is involved in with a former DJ who she claims groped her.
I'll spare the details (they seem to be all over the web today) but I had to laugh at a number of her responses to questions from opposing counsel. Swift's bodyguard testified late this afternoon and corroborated her account of the incident in which she claims the man put his hand up her skirt and "grabbed (her) ass."
And if you seen the picture, I'd say it corroborates her side of the story. It sure looks like he has his hand up her skirt.

As always, death proves to be good for sales: Glen Campbell recordings have seen a 5,429% jump after his death earlier this week.

Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney announced yesterday that Dionne Warwick would be awarded with the Marian Anderson Award, that's presented to "critically acclaimed artists who have impacted society in a positive way."
The five-time Grammy winner will receive the award at a November 14 ceremony.

A US District Judge has ordered rapper/actor DMX be confined to his New York City home for his repeated violations of the bail conditions of his tax fraud charges.
The judge also ordered electronic monitoring and stipulated that DMX must seek permission to travel at least a week in advance.
Judge Jed Rakoff also said that a "strong argument could be made for keeping him in jail," but added he believed judicial authorities were sometimes too quick to incarcerate people awaiting trial.

Don't forget to join Mark tomorrow night for another rockin' edition of Saturday Night Karaoke, live and loud at the Iron Horse Tavern in Historic Downtown Norcross.
Birthdays today include: J-Boog of B2K (32); Ali of A Tribe Called Quest (47); Charlie Sexton (49); Bragi Ólafsson of The Sugarcubes (55); Joe Jackson (63); Eric Carmen (68); Jim Kale of the Guess Who (74); Mike Hugg of Manfred Mann (75). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for August 9, 2017

Good Wednesday morning, kids.
It's a dreary morning here at the karaoke compound. As far as I can tell, it's been raining since around 3 this morning- at least, based on the thunder that was rumbling around that time.
Me, I'm laid up sitting on the couch with my leg propped up after feeling something give way yesterday at work. Who manages to pull/strain a muscle in the back of their thigh while squatting down to pick up empty boxes? This fucking guy, that's who.

Don't forget to join us for Saturday Night Karaoke. Mark mans the mic this week for all the fun.

Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood says he feared the worst after being diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year.
The 70 year old thought it might be "time to say goodbye," after a doctor told him he "had this supernova burning away on my left lung."
Wood told The Mail he decided against chemotherapy if test results turned out to be bad, "I wasn't going to lose my hair. This hair wasn't going anywhere."
Fortunately, the lesion was small. Wood said he'll undergo checks every three months for recurrences.

Producers of the Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me have asked that a lawsuit by writer Kevin Powell be dismissed because he never he obtained, or even sought, a registration certificate for his work.
Powell claims that the film infringes upon several of his articles for Vibe magazine published in the 1990s.
In a motion to dismiss filed for Lionsgate, Morgan Creek, Program Pictures, and L.T. Hutton, attorneys say Powell "merely offers the conclusory allegations that the Asserted Works were 'copyrighted' or 'copyrightable.' But Plaintiff did not plead that he owns valid copyright registrations in the Asserted Works, or that the Copyright Office denied registration for the Asserted Works. Nor did Plaintiff attach any registration certificates to the Complaint, or any correspondence from the Copyright Office indicating a refusal to register any of the Asserted Works. This alone warrants dismissal. Moreover, a search of the Copyright Office’s registration database for 'Kevin Powell' and for each of the titles of the Asserted Works returned no corresponding registrations."
The judge in the case has not ruled on the motion.

Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph has signed on to star in Fox's musical version of A Christmas Story.
Rudolph will play Ralphie Parker's mother- a role originally played by Melinda Dillon. No other casting has been announced for the show, set to air December 17.
I seriously do not understand why everyone is so fucking gaga over this movie. Yes, it was funny. Once or twice. Twenty four fucking hours a day at Christmas for twenty something fucking years killed all charm for that shit, though. Now, I just want to Elvis the fucking TV every Christmas Eve when flipping past TNT/TBS/Whatever-other-fucking-channel they run it on.

Birthdays today include: Arion Salazar of Third Eye Blind (45); Aimee Mann (57); Kurtis Blow (58); Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello and The Attractions (63); and Marinus Gerritsen of Golden Earring (71). #MusicalBirthdays

Sad news.

Glenn Campbell died today as a result of complications from Alzheimer's.
From Campbell's official Facebook page: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease," reads a statement from the family. "Glen is survived by his wife, Kim Campbell of Nashville, TN; their three children, Cal, Shannon and Ashley; his children from previous marriages, Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane, and Dillon; ten grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren; sisters Barbara, Sandra, and Jane; and brothers John Wallace “Shorty” and Gerald. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Glen Campbell Memorial Fund at BrightFocus Foundation through the CareLiving.org donation page. A personal statement from Kim Campbell will follow. The family appreciates your prayers and respect for their privacy at this time."

From his daughter's Twitter feed came this touching photo.

#WhatsHappening for August 6, 2017

Good Sunday morning, kids. Hope you're enjoying your weekend so far. If you missed Saturday Night Karaoke last night, you missed a rocking good time, but no worries- you'll have another chance to cut loose next weekend.

Lollapalooza 2017's opening day in Chicago's Grant Park had to be cut things short Thursday when bad weather forced an evacuation.
As storm clouds piled up on the horizon, Lorde's manager pulled her from the stage and festival organizers told ticketholders the show would "not continue, please clear the park immediately. Follow instructions from the park and Chicago police."
Lorde apologized to concert goers before leaving the stage, saying, "I'll do everything I can, I'll be back."

I guess it's supposed to be Courtney?
This year's Seattle Art Fair will feature a number of paintings and drawings by the late Kurt Cobain, including some never seen works.
The collection will not be offered for sale.

August Darnell wants everyone to know he is not the Kidd Creole that was arrested on charges of stabbing a homeless man to death this week.
Darnell, a.k.a. Kid Creole of Kid Creole and the Coconuts says some fans have been confused by media reports of the incidents. Darnell told Billboard that he had been "in a recording studio in Copenhagen for the last 2 weeks. I did not know about this situation. Now that I know, I still do not know... to the KCC fans who were concerned by this news, all I can say is IT WASN'T ME. But thanks anyway for the concern."

Actor Marwan Kenzari is reported to be in negotiations to play Jafar in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin.
While the film is, at least, casting actors of Middle Eastern heritage for the title role and the villain- I have to wonder why they thought Will Smith was the best choice for the role of the genie? Or, for that matter, why they thought an actress of Indian ancestry was a good good choice for Princess Jasmine- seeing as India is not the Middle East.

Matchbox Twenty fans in Tuscon had to wait a while before the band's show at Casino del Sol could start after a swarm of "a couple thousand bees" invaded the venue.
Beekeepers were finally able to clear the insects out and the show started around 9:15. A post on the band's official Instagram showed the beekeeper giving a thumbs-up in front of a pale blue truck, captioned, "The bees couldn't stop us. Thanx for sticking with us Tucson!"
I'm sure I've told this story before, but six or seven years ago, we went to see the band at Philips Arena and the show started (maybe) twenty minutes late. No biggie, it's rare to attend a show that starts on time. In fact (again, my experience), the "bigger" the name, the later they start.
Matchbox Twenty was different from every other band I'd ever seen, though- because the first thing Rob Thomas did, before they even played a note, was to apologize for the delay.

Birthdays today include: Eric Roberts (33) and Travis McCoy (36) of Gym Class Heroes; Donna Lewis (44); Geri Halliwell of Spice Girls (45); Randy DeBarge of DeBarge (59); Pat McDonald of Timbuk 3 (66); and Mike Elliott of the Foundations (88). #MusicalBirthdays

#WhatsHappening for August 3, 2017

Hey kids. I've been working around the karaoke compound this week.
Like this, but worse.
Shortly after we moved in (eight years ago), I took a pressure washer to the deck- and boy, did it look good. But- because I'm forgetful- I didn't stain, paint, or seal it (also, I'm a moron) so it looked pretty gnarly until around 9 last night, when I finally got done pressure washing it again. Now- do I paint, stain, or just seal? Anyone have an opinion?

Rolan Feld, son of T. Rex front-man Marc Bolan, has filed a copyright infringement suit against the folks behind Baby Driver, claiming they didn't secure the rights to use the band's song, Debora.
No, not that one.
Feld was granted the rights to 144 of his father's composition after a 2014 lawsuit where his attorneys argued that an old copyright rule vesting rights to an author's heirs when the author dies during the initial copyright term applied as Bolan died when his son was still an infant.
In this case, Feld's lawyers say Sony, Media Rights Capital, Bambino Films, and others "failed to obtain- or even seek- the permission of the composition’s U.S. copyright holder... (and) ...neither apologized nor offered to pay Feld a reasonable license fee."

"LL Cool J is hard as hell
Battle anybody I don't care who you tell
I excel, they all fail
Gonna crack shells, Double-L must rock the bells."
(I just like the song)
LL Cool J has been named one of this year's Kennedy Center honorees- the first hip hop artist to be so honored.
The recipients, announced today, also include Gloria Estefan, Lionel Richie, television writer and producer Norman Lear, and dancer Carmen de Lavallade.
The honorees will be celebrated December 3rd, with the show being broadcast on CBS on December 26th.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five founding member Kidd Creole (Nathaniel Glover) has been accused of stabbing a homeless man to death.
Police said Glover was walking near his place of employment in midtown Manhattan when he passed by the man- who he claims he thought was hitting on him- and the two began an argument which then led to the stabbing.
Glover being held pending an arraignment on a murder charge.

Birthdays today include: Holly Artnstein of Dream (32); Dean Sams of Lonestar (51); James Hetfield of Metallica (54); Ed Roland of Collective Soul (54); Randy Scruggs of Stray Cats (56); John Graham of Earth, Wind & Fire (66); Tony Bennett (81). #MusicalBirthdays
