#WhatsHappening for January 16, 2021

Good morning, friends. Hope you're all having a good weekend and- if you're in one of the areas looking at crappy weather- prepared, warm, and dry.
Me, I'm just doing my normal Sunday stuff- laundry and whatnot.
I did take the time yesterday to put up a makeshift windbreak on one side of the gazebo on the deck, so the outdoor cats that hang around the house would have a sheltered place to sleep. Sure, they're outdoor cats and used to shitty weather, but that doesn't mean I can't help make it a little easier on 'em. Besides, one of them looks sort of like my dear, departed Cat (aka Goddamnit Cat!).

In case you missed it, Ronnie Spector passed away last week after what a statement from her family called "a brief battle" with cancer.
The statement- posted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer's website- went on to say that a memorial "celebration of (her) life and music will be announced in the future."

We watched Eternals last week. From what I can tell, I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed it. It wasn't the "typical" MCU movie- and that's just fine by me. It was also absolutely beautifully photographed.
What I didn't care for was the weird, elf/dwarf/whatever CGI thing at the end, voiced by Patton Oswalt. Of course, most of that has to do with not caring for Patton Oswalt. There's just something about him I find... off-putting. And that was after two and a half hours or so of putting aside my dislike of Angelina Jolie.
Next up- Spider-Man: No Way Home. Still not hip on going to a theater to see it, though- unless the theater is otherwise empty. If you know me at all, you'll know that actually has nothing to do with the plague and everything to do with my general dislike of people.

Six people were hospitalized following a mass shooting in the parking outside of WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon Friday night, during a concert by rappers Lil Bean and Zay Bang.
Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner said police arrived on the scene less than three minutes after the shooting and found six victims of gunshot wounds. "What law enforcement found when they came on scene is what you would exactly expect when six people just got shot. People are just trying to get out of here, their friends are on the ground, they're trying to help," he said.
A WOW Hall statement said all of their "staff and volunteers are safe and accounted for" and added the shooting was "unprecedented at the WOW Hall." (One could only hope.)
Police have no suspects in the shooting and asked that anyone with information call them.

Just a week after having the suit dismissed by a California judge, Rolling Stone reports that the Nevermind baby has refiled an amended version of his suit against Nirvana alleging that the album cover constitutes child pornography.
The refiled complaint claims that the band, Kurt Cobain’s estate, photographer Kurt Weddle, and a number of record labels "intentionally commercially marketed the child pornography... and leveraged the lascivious nature of (the) image to promote the Nevermind album, the band, and Nirvana’s music, while earning, at a minimum, tens of millions of dollars in the aggregate."
Personally, I still wonder how these suits haven't been dismissed for just being fuckall stupid- considering how the guy's basically spent his adult years profiting off being the "Nevermind baby", doing talk show appearances, photo recreations, autographing copies of the album (for a fee, of course) and using his "fame" to pick up women.

I was just scrolling through my Facebook "memories" and saw that, on this day 11 years ago, Atlanta was in the midst of another winter weather "emergency." I evidently didn't work that week.

Country songwriter Dallas Frazier, who penned hits for a veritable Who's Who of stars, passed away Friday at 82.
Country Music Hall of Fame CEO Kyle Young called Frazier one of the "the greatest country songwriters of all time. He could convey infectious fun with Elvira, and then write something as stunningly sad and true as Beneath Still Waters. He was a man of kindness, generosity and faith, who overcame a hardscrabble upbringing to offer smiling gifts to all of us."
Among those who performed Frazier's songs were Charley Pride (who had four chart topping songs that co-wrote with Frazier), Connie Smith, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Charlie Rich, Rodney Crowell, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Moe Bandy, Brenda Lee, Gene Watson, Charlie Louvin, George Strait, Patty Loveless, Roy Clark, Tanya Tucker and Randy Travis. He also wrote songs for Poco and The Hollywood Argyles' Alley Oop- which he wrote in 1959 at age 17, while working in his father's cotton mill.
