#WhatsHappening for Sunday, September 8, 2019

Good Sunday morning, friends. Hope you're enjoying the weekend.

I can't believe that I actually enjoyed being outside so much when I was younger. Of course, it wasn't as damned hot as it is these days, I had a lot more energy, and I was usually doing something fun- like playing pick-up games of baseball, football, basketball, riding my bike, swimming, etc. I was outside most of the day yesterday- and in the sun long enough to have a pink face that now feels like it's on fire (for me, that's about 10 or 15 minutes). Today, I'm gonna run up my electric bill while I park my fat ass on the couch with the window unit in the den set to 68.

One of my friends mentioned on Facebook that she'd gone to see It: Chapter Two yesterday and called it "more funny than scary." That does not give me a good feeling. They must be doing something right, though- looks like it's gonna make around $90 million this weekend.

I'm grumpy and old, I know, but I just can't take seriously any article that's headlined with "Claps Back" in it.

Buddy Holly would have been 83 years old yesterday.
If you're not familiar with his music, A) what the hell is wrong with you, and 2) check it out. He was an incredibly gifted talent.

Did you catch the news that Sheryl Crow says her latest album would be her last? That's what I kept seeing in headlines, but the articles always included her saying she'd keep releasing music.
Just singles or something, I guess?

I think I've mentioned quite a few times before that I'm not much for holiday music, but I'm going to have to get myself a copy of Rob Halford's upcoming Christmas album, Celestial, which comes out October 18th.
Yes, the Rob Halford from Judas Priest. The album is said to "blend holiday favorites and new compositions."

Oh, back to movies for a sec- the ridiculous fight between Sony and Disney over Spider-Man isn't doing anything but screwing the fans. And I'm in the camp that is (kind of, at least) on the Disney/MCU side. I don't give a shit what anyone says, Sam Raimi's movies were fucking terrible, and Tobey McGuire and Kirsten I-Should-Be-Peer-Recognized-For-My-Talent Dunst were, too. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone at least had some chemistry, but their two outings were only slightly better.
Here's the real rub, to me: I'm not really a Spider-Man fan. That said, Tom Holland's portrayal of the character from Captain America: Civil War on, though, was great. They made the character interesting in a way that Sony hadn't managed to do in five of their six solo efforts (seriously, they should turn the live action films over to the Into the Spider-Verse filmmakers if they want to go back to full ownership). And allowing the character to join his printed universe cohorts allowed the character a depth that was seriously lacking in any of the Sony incarnations.
Did Disney ask for too much of a stake in the profits? Maybe. Did Sony screw the pooch by thinking they can go it alone, after the character was being lined up to be the centerpiece of the next incarnation of the Avengers saga? Absolutely. Even 50% of those profits would like have been far more than the studio will have managed with almost any version of the character they've saddled us with.
<Nerd rant ended.>

I'd enter the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes, but I can't stand Steve Harvey. I've never tried out for Jeopardy! for much the same reason, but Alex Trebeck instead. I'd probably have some sort of cerebral hemorrhage or something attempting to be polite to them.

I find it hard to sympathize with someone dying because they're Instagramming their drive. Put down the fucking phone, you moron. I realize that the attention whore-ness of many younger "artists" is essential to their success, but is it really worth your life?

We'll have details on the when for the Tenth Annual Costumes & Karaoke Party soon. Stay tuned.
