The 9th Circuit has denied appeals filed by Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams in the 2015 case filed by Marvin Gaye's family in the Got to Give It Up/Blurred Lines. While the court upheld the $5.3 million judgement against Thicke and Williams, it reversed the award against rapper T.I.
Writing for the majority, Judge Milan D. Smith Jr. said "Musical compositions are not confined to a narrow range of expression"- rejecting Thicke's attorneys arguments that only "thin" protection, due to its being created before copyright laws were amended in the 1970s.
