#WhatsHappening for February 24, 2016

Hi kids. Happy hump day.

I got to thinking about great song lyrics today, and I have to say- I have quite a few "favorites." Too many to pick just one "top", in fact. Some that I consider the "best", though...
"All Along The Watchtower"
I'm not particularly a fan of his voice, but I would never deny that Bob Dylan is a phenomenal lyricist. And Jimi Hendrix's blistering guitar solo elevates what is already a great song into the realm of all-time bad-assery.

"The Rising"
Bruce Springsteen's heartfelt homage to the men and women who ran towards the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001- "The Rising" is simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting, not to mention anthemic enough to get any crowd on its feet.

"Sound of Silence"
This was actually a hard choice for me, because I think "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is astounding- and so is pretty much the entire Simon & Garfunkel catalog.
That said, "Hello darkness, my old friend- I've come to talk with you again" sets the tone for a song that is breathtakingly bleak. (And yes, I like Disturbed's version, too.)

"The Man Comes Around"
Johnny Cash's "American" album series- the last new music Cash made before dying- contains some of Cash's most personal- and profound- work. Seriously, I defy you to say that his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" isn't moving.
"The Man Comes Around," though, is the best of the bunch. Said to be inspired by a dream Cash had about Queen Elizabeth II, the song was one of three Cash-penned compositions that appeared on "American IV: The Man Comes Around," and was the only one written specifically for the set.

"God Only Knows"
Seriously- he may be a complete fucking whack-job, but Brian Wilson can craft a gorgeous song. I really wish I had the chops to pull this one off at karaoke! The subtle French horn wonderfully complements the Beach Boys incredible harmonies that send this love song to heights that were previously pretty much unheard of among pop groups.

Other favorites:"Wish You Were Here", "A Day In The Life", "The River of Dreams", "Beautiful Loser", "Terrible Lie", "You're My Best Friend", "Roll With The Changes", "7", "Don't Give Up", and I think I'll stop here or this will be one long-assed blog post.

“Weird Al” Yankovic is hitting the road again with 78 summer dates across North America during the Return of the Mandatory World Tour.
The tour kicks off in St. Petersburg on June 3 and wraps up September 24 at Radio City Music Hall in New York- and includes a June 19 stop at the fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta.

Birthdays today include: Michelle ShockedRupert HolmesLonnie Turner of the Steve Miller Band; and Paul Jones of Manfred Mann#MusicalBirthdays
