Good Sunday morning, kids. Hope you've all enjoyed your weekend so far.
College football kicked off this weekend, though a full slate ramps up beginning Thursday- which, of course, is the eve of the long Labor Day weekend- which also means throngs of nerds in downtown Atlanta for DragonCon alongside the throngs of college football fans who'll be in town for the two "kick off" games.
Living downtown as I did when I first left Savannah, it was always amusing to watch the reactions of the football folks to the 'con folks.
I was sad to read this morning that director Tobe Hooper had died late last night.
Best known for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hooper was also Steven Spielberg's choice to direct a little movie called Poltergeist- which was actually scarier than the former (don't get your panties in a wad- Texas Chainsaw is visceral, gritty, and horrifying, but Poltergeist is a slow burn that relied on spook factor more than "gotcha" moments).
No cause of death has been reported.
Coldplay and Mary J. Blige were among the acts who cancelled performances this weekend as Hurricane Harvey bore down on Texas.
Coldplay announced Friday morning that their concert that night in Houston would be rescheduled, as they felt they couldn't ask fans "to put their safety at risk. So, sadly, we will have to postpone."
Blige's show across town at the Smart Financial Center was also rescheduled for next month, with a post to Facebook letting fans know that "Tickets for (the) show will be honored on September 19th. If you are not able to attend the rescheduled date, refunds will be made available at the point of purchase."
Lady Antebellum's show this afternoon was cancelled outright in the "interest of fan safety" and show promoter LiveNation said that fans would automatically receive refunds.
There's a whole page on Billboard dedicated to the VMAs and I'll repeat: MTV hasn't been a venue for music videos for fucking years- why do they still pretend otherwise? I don't get it.
The Fall have announced that they would be cancelling their appearance at Louisville’s Cropped Out festival after front man Mark E. Smith was hospitalized for throat, mouth, and respiratory problems.
A statement from the band's manager said they'd also be cancelling their New York City show, too- but added that "NYC has been rescheduled already and we are gonna arrange another show in Louisville."
And yet another one... Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were forced to cancel their Friday night gig- their second cancellation of the week- as Petty continued to battle laryngitis.
Petty's Twitter account told fans that "all tickets for tonight's show to be honored on the new date"- which will be next Friday. The band's scheduled show tonight in Berkeley was postponed until Wednesday, while they'll attempt to make up for last Wednesday's cancellation tomorrow night.
Wait a minute- Fifth Harmony is a group of women? I thought it was a boy band.
